Thailand’s political party stops election campaign after criticism from the king

Thai Raksa Chart stops Saturday’s election campaigns after Thailand’s king criticized the sister for being Prime Minister.

Friday, the party nominated Princess Ubolratana as prime minister, which did not fall into good ground with the incumbent King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Thai Raksa Chart has therefore decided to stop the party’s election campaign for the time being.

“Right now we need to reorganize, and we will immediately make a statement about our future plans,” says a high-ranking party member of DPA.

Thailand’s king said in a statement Friday that he believes it is inappropriate and unconstitutional that Princess Ubolratana will become prime minister. Ubolratana is his older sister, the eldest daughter of the late King Bhumibol.

– Bringing a high-ranking member of the royal family into the political system is contrary to royal traditions and the nation’s culture. It is inappropriate, it says in a rare statement by the king.

The King issued a decree on Friday night stating that no member of the royal family should engage in politics. The order was read by the king himself on state television, AP reports.
