Several organizations demands the UN to investigate the Khashoggi case

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was reported missing in Saudi few days back and later confirmed that he was assassinated. The reason and people behind it is still unknown.

Several non-governmental organizations demand that Turkey should ask the UN for an independent investigation of the alleged assassination of journalist.

A team of Turkish police and Saudi Arabian delegations are currently investigating the case, but NGO’s and other organizations believes that they can not rely on the Saudi Arabs to carry out a credible investigation of themselves.

An investigation by the UN is “the best guarantee against Saudi Arabia’s white paint,” said Robert Mahoney in the press conference, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Thursday.

CPJ and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Amnesty, Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Reporters Without Borders, held a press conference on Thursday, requiring the UN to launch an investigation into the disappearance of Khashoggi.

“This is not the way one conducts a criminal investigation. Let the Saudi Arabs investigate themselves is like giving them an open door to white paint, so we call for a UN investigation, “said Louis Charbonneau in HRW.

Organizations have contacted Turkey’s UN delegation twice with questions about whether the UN should not investigate the matter without receiving any response.

Spokesman for UN Secretary General António Guterres says they can not launch investigations unless both parties in the case, ie Turkey and Saudi Arabia, ask for it themselves or that one of the UN’s council is given a mandate that may be the UN Security Council or UN Human Rights Council.

It is over two weeks since the journalist disappeared when he went to the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia refuses to have anything about Khashoggi’s disappearance to do. US President Donald Trump stated Thursday that it appears that the journalist is dead.
