A Russian man is sentenced to one year and two months in prison for robbing the bank in Svalbard before Christmas.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man in Nord-Troms District Court is ordered to pay the bank employees a total of NOK 60,000, NRK reports .
The runner directed a charged rifle against several of the employees in Sparebank 1 in Longyearbyen on December 21 last year. He forced the employees to give him 70,000 kroner. Then he went with a loaded weapon in the pedestrian street in Longyearbyen before he was arrested by armed police.
The 29-year-old has explained that he did the robbery to get attention so that he would get help for his psychological problems.
This will be the first time a bank robbery has occurred on the archipelago in the north.
