According to the newspaper Klassekampen, Russia is planning to carry our a military exercise outside Møre coast. The exercise will include shooting of missiles in the sea and is scheduled amidst NATO exercise, Trident Juncture.
“The Russian exercise will take place in the sea just outside the Møre Coast, a short distance from the Norwegian cities Kristiansund, Molde and Ålesund, and in an area with several Norwegian offshore installations,” writes the newspaper.
The exercise will take place from 1 to 3 November, from 7 am to 2 pm in the afternoon, all days.
The Armed Forces Operational Headquarters (FOH) confirms the information to Klassekampen.
– We are familiar with this message. The exercise Trident Juncture will continue as planned, says Lieutenant Colonel Ivar Moen to the Class Match.
It was Avinor who received a message from Russian authorities on Friday. The message from the Russian Central Air Traffic Authority states:
“This is to inform you that the Russian Navy is planning a pilot shooting of missiles in the Norwegian Sea, 1, 2 and 3 November 2018. Daily from 0700 to 1400”.
Not a conincidence
According to June Wilhelmsen, Senior Researcher at NUPI, the Russian military exercise at this time is not a coincidence.
– I can not know for sure. But it’s very likely that this is a kind of feedback on “Trident Juncture”.
She also links the case with the escalation of the conflict between NATO and Russia.
“Russia is skeptical about all NATO military operations and practice activities in the Northern Territories. Similarly, Norway and NATO are very skeptical of Russian escalation.
