Two foreign nationals got caught up in an accident on board a Malta-registered tanker, called Key Fighter, at Stadlandet. One died and the other is critically injured, according to the reports.
The ship, which usually carries rapeseed oil and fish oil, was on its way from Norway to England when the accident took place and the shipping company, as of now, has no idea of what went wrong.
“We are in an early stage to clarify events and follow up relatives and crew in general,” says spokesperson for Fjord Shipping, lawyer Hugo Matre, to NTB.
The men were doing their work and both of them were experienced seamen, according to Matre. They belonged to a crew of 14 members.
The main rescue center of Southern Norway was notified of the accident at 4.30 on Saturday morning. They sent a helicopter just after getting the information and a few minutes later, the men were sent to a hospital in Ålesund.
“This is a tragic event and the shipping company does everything we can to support relatives and crew both with practical things and with psychosocial assistance. So far, we assist the relevant authorities and ensure that there is no problem for further operation on the vessel, “said the spokesman.
The two were exposed to hydrogen sulfide, according to the police, but they cannot say anything more as of now. They are still investigating the site and questioning the crew.
Both the Maritime Directorate and the Havarikommission have been notified of the accident.
