22 Miners locked in coal mine in eastern China

Two miners have been confirmed dead and 20 others are locked in a coal mine in Shandong Province, east of China after a rock burst on Saturday night.

More than 300 people were working in mine when parts of a water drainage tunnel broke down after the burst at around 11:00 PM (local time). Most were rescued in good retention, but 22 workers were blocked according to Zhai Minghua, an expert with Shandong Energy Group Co. Ltd, which owns the coal mine.

Two of the inmates confirmed to be dead while the condition of the remaining 20 is unknown. Ventilation system has returned around 200 meters of the damaged tunnel still 50 meters to be repaired.

140 rescue workers are now trying to get into the locked workers. Rock burst accidents are often caused by fractures in rocks due to mining.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
