At least 22 people are killed in fighting between soldiers and a militia group east of Congo, according to the army in the country.
The clashes in the city of Beni began on Thursday. The army claims that 20 militia members and two soldiers have been killed.
The militia is referred to as Mai-Mai – a collective term for groups formed to defend local ethnic groups against rebels east of Congo. The area has for many years been characterized by conflict and struggles between different insurgency groups.
The rebels, among other things, are fighting for control of valuable mineral resources in the eastern part of Congo.
