France will vote against EU-US trade talks

France is going to vote against the EU starting trade talks with the United States, France said in a statement.

“France will probably be the only country to vote against in a near-symbolic vote on Monday,” said President Emmanuel Macron.

It has been demanded that the United States sign the Paris Agreement before the talks can begin.

The EU member states decided on Thursday to start trade talks with the United States.

The negotiating mandate was approved at ambassador level on Thursday. Thus, only formal approval at ministerial level remains before the calls can start.

This approval can be expected at the EU agriculture and fisheries ministerial meeting the following Monday.

The decision comes after months of stalled discussions where France has blocked agreement.
