Brazilian police have shot and killed eight people in one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest slums.
Weapons, money and drugs were seized by police in connection with Monday’s shooting where eight were killed.
Top-rated police forces were facing Thomaz Jhayson Vieira Gomes, known as “3N”, who, according to police, planned an attack on another favela 35 kilometers away.
“The criminals resisted and were shot and killed in the confrontation,” police said in a statement. It is not known whether Vieira Gomes is among the killed.
The killings occur only a few days after figures showed a record number of police killings in Brazil so far this year. The country’s President Jair Bolsonaro has pledged to hit hard on gang crime in the country, which has one of the highest killings in the world.
