The Defense Minister met the crew from KNM Helge Ingstad

Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen (H) has met the crew who was on board when the frigate Helge Ingstad collapsed last week.

Helge Ingstad was on his way back to Haakonsvern after participating in the NATO Trident Juncture exercise when the collision occurred. The frigate was part of NATO’s standing maritime force, since the vessel is submerged, the Defense Minister would possibly offer alternative solution.

“Now we are planning how we can fulfill the sailing days with the vessels we have. And then we will see in view of NATO and other commitments if we may offer other types of capabilities. I think we should be able to fulfill our obligations, “said Defense Minister.

The meeting between the Defense Minister and the crew took place on board Helge Ingstad’s sister ship Roald Amundsen in Bergen on Wednesday afternoon. Defense chief Haakon Bruun-Hanssen was also present at the meeting. Bakke-Jensen praised the crew for responding quickly to raising each other in a demanding situation.

“It has been a great day with strong stories and meetings. When required, they did absolutely everything they could. This could have gone a lot worse. I’m incredibly happy everyone came to land, “said the minister of defense at Bergens Tidene .

– Now let’s let the accident commission do its job. They are going to investigate the course of events, and in the meanwhile we can concentrate on the crew, who will be praised for the way they handle this, “says Bakke-Jensen to TV 2.

The crew of 137 people was evacuated from the frigate after the collision, and eight people were more easily injured in the collision. Two of them were sent to Haukeland University Hospital and the other six to the emergency room.

The crew should have been highly affected by the incident and, following the accident, was taken care of at a reception center at Haakonsvern, the Navy’s main base just outside Bergen.
