Cargo ships with dangerous substances have been destroyed by German city

A cargo ship with 9,000 tonnes of hazardous chemicals has been destroyed by the German city of Cuxhaven along the River Elbe, the authorities said.

The ship is 124 meters long and 20 meters wide and is loaded with chemicals such as ethylene chloride. Several of the chemicals are flammable.

It was on its way from Spain to Germany when it was due one night night on Monday.

Neither the ship nor the crew were injured, according to a spokesman for the coast guard. The authorities are now working to find out how to save the ship.
