The man who was shot and killed after hijacking a plane in Bangladesh on Sunday, only had a toy gun, local police said.
The man tried to hijack a plane from the airline Biman Bangladesh with 148 people on board. The plane was on its way from the capital Dhaka to Dubai with a stopover in Chattogram – formerly known as Chittagong – southeast of Bangladesh.
After landing in Chattogram, the plane was surrounded by police while the passengers were evacuated. According to military spokesman Motiur Rahman, the hijacker was shot and killed when special forces stormed the plane after landing.
– We found a gun on him and nothing else, says Rahman. Monday, local police say it was a play gun, says Reuters .
During the hijacking attempt, the man had contact with the police on the telephone. It is not clear what his motive was, but he is described as “insane” by the country’s air carrier Nayeem Hasan. He also says that the man claimed to have had a bomb on the plane.
Another military spokesman says the man claimed he had a bomb attached to his chest.
Hasan said on Sunday that an investigation will be initiated to identify any security deficiencies.
