5 people died after driving into a mountain wall at Rjukan

A group of 5 people, 3 women and two men were involved in a serious car accident on county road 651 in Telemark this afternoon. The police denounce it as a fatal accident, without further elucidating it.

The car with the five should have driven into a mountain wall where the road goes past Gaustatoppen on Sunday afternoon.

Both the accident group to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and forensic workers was sent to the accident site together with air ambulance.

At 15.10, the police confirm that it is a fatal accident without further elucidation.

– I can confirm that it is a fatal accident. Beyond this we can not say anything more right now, says operations manager Rune Hunshamar in the southeast police district of NTB.

At 16.45, the police reported that four people had died while a person was flown to Ullevål Hospital.

At 17:30, the police informed that the person who had flown to hospital had died.

“The person who was escorted to Ullevål Hospital after the traffic accident died unfortunately as a result of the injuries, writes South East Police District on Twitter.

Police has traced out the owner of the car and are working on to make a contact with their relatives. They are also looking for witness to know what exactly happened at the location of accident.

“It’s a car that has driven into a mountain wall, beyond that we do not know more about what has happened. If anyone has information about the police, we would like them to contact us, “said Hunshamar.

The road reopened

At 15 o’clock the police reported on Twitter that nobody had to pass either down to Rjukan from Gaustadtoppen, or up from Rjukan.

“County Road 651 will be closed for hours to come, so you have to take alternative routes,” Hunshamar said at 17 o’clock.

Just before 22:30 on Sunday night, the operation manager announced that the road on site had been opened again.
